The scene: There are two halves to the alley between The Royal Mile and the Vaudeville Mews on Fourth Street downtown. Up front, the tables and chairs are reserved for Royal Mile patrons, with the Mile’s staff taking orders at the tables. The back half of the alley is the Vaudeville Mews’ PBR Bar, with DJs and hip-hop on Friday and Saturday nights.

The PBR Bar does have an actual bar on the weekends. If you’re looking for a lot of options, you probably want to go inside. The PBR Bar offers you PBR or Coors Banquet (fancy!) tallboys and enough hard liquors and mixers to whip together your standard drink options. Everything is stored in coolers and kept cold with ice out of the Vaudeville Mews. It’s cash-only, so don’t try to open a tab with your card.

Oh, and you’ll notice rocks scattered around the counter top. Those aren’t for throwing in a drunken rage — they’re for holding down tips. Paper money will take flight if a nearby sparrow burps, so make sure it’s weighted down.

What we ordered: I know it’s the PBR Bar, but for some reason Coors Banquet always calls out to me. And the $3 price is a pretty good deal. It was delicious, but more importantly, it was cold. It was exactly 157 degrees the Saturday night I went, and I downed my beer in about five minutes.

Who we met: If you’re a local music fan, you would have recognized some familiar faces the night I stopped by. The Autumn Project’s Jess Huffman was hanging out after work and Christopher the Conquered’s Chris Ford made a few appearances. On Pitch’s Jill Haverkamp and Hillary Brown were also hanging out and watching DJ All Bugs spin on the alley stage.

It was surprising how quickly the patio filled up. When I showed up at 9 p.m. it was basically me and bartender T.J. Wood. By 9:30 p.m. the patio was full of life, despite the heat.

The view: Not spectacular. Brick buildings to the north and south, a parking garage to the west and the Royal Mile’s patio to the east. There are also some nativity scene figures lighting up the bar.

Why you should go: Cheap beers, cool music and the chance you might see that night’s headliner enjoying a beer outside. As far as bars go, this one’s pretty low-tech, but the lively crowd and $3 beers fire things up a bit.

Best for: Cheap beer and good music in an outdoor setting

next time you're around, take a look at what was done to the bar. nothing that couldn't be undone with a little bit of guerilla tactics, but enough to get the point across.

...it's been boarded up. plywood screwed over the top of the bar.
