ONE LIFE CREW, while humerous and fun to listen to, does indeed suck.

Strife's first 7" is tite.

The answer to my question was Catharsis.

Isn't there a long held tradition of Straight Edge bands sucking? It's good to see todays youth up holding that. There is a direct line of suck ass that goes from Uniform Choice, SSD to Youth of Today, Slapstick to Earth Crisis. Why stop now?

Slapstick was a pet name we had for Slapshot. Not the Chicago ska band but the one from Boston with Choke as the lead singer. I in fact saw them. The highlight of the show was Choke broke his loved hockey stick cause people wouldn't stop spitting beer on him.

The Truth is I was Straight edge(85 to 89) when most of the second generation bands were starting out. Listen to all that shit. It's strange but one of the first shows I got drunk at was a straight edge show in Omaha around 89. That was around the time that all those bands started turning into full on speed and glam metal bands.

yeah it was at the Outhouse. Great place to see shows back then, pretty much a free for all. Kind of like the Briar Patch but for punks not hippies.

I have to say though marching down Hennepin Ave with about 30 skinheads chanting that Straight Edge chant was something to experience.

You've got to be kidding me, Davo. I've thought that some of your musical tastes were questionable (i.e. X after "Los Angeles", US Bombs, The Humpers, etc) but if you can't appreciate good old fashioned straight edge hardcore, I'm at a loss of words and I think you will be the only one here to hold that opinion....and it's not because we're all wrong.

It's one thing to not like those bands, but it's another thing to say that Slapshot, Youth of Today and so-on suck.

Look at this way, at the point most of those bands came about, the whole thing had ran it's course. The longer the second generation was around, especially the NYC bands the more metal they became. Also by comparison even X at it's worst still out shined Youth of Today on it's best day. So maybe Suck isn't the right word. Maybe dull, rather boring and down right mediocure at best. Those bands were look at as a return to old school which was a joke in itself. I mean this was what 85? and they were trying to be old school like the bands from 2 years ago? Many of these bands only selling point was the straight edge thing. If you would have taken SE out of it they would have never drawn outside their local town and we more than likely wouldn't be talking about them today.

What those bands did more then anything is stick to the winning formual and put lyrics about beating up drunks and the greatness of unity over it. Dull for the most part, not really different and well, really kind of suck ass. That said I could enjoy listening to a lot of those bands and enjoy it but it's kind of like MDC, DRI or MOD it's more about the time in my life when I was listening to them then them being great bands.

I know all music genres are like funnels. They start out very broad and open with a number of different sounds and styles and then quickly turn into a one sound scene. Nothing represents why hardcore died more then the late 80s hardcore SE bands. It was like, "OK when we were younger we were open to all these ideas but hey were 20 now and I'll I want it this." and that's what you got. The Cromags introduced the metal and soon everyone ran with it.

The thing is I would listen something as silly and old as Everything Went Black or Group Sex or Victium in Pain and then put on Break Down the Walls and it just sucked. So maybe that's where it came from. It sucked to go out and seek out this band, buy their record and only find that the Bad Brains record you bought 5 years ago was still better.
