went to riot fest one year just to see the ergs.

it was the poorest organized concert event i have ever been to in my life.
90 minute line to get in.
no place inside to get water or anything.
shitloads of terrible bands and kids.
and the cops shut it down at 11, after ALL had played for 20 minutes.

Articles Of Faith pretty much started the midwest hardcore scene 25 years ago. Everyone should be stoked to see them. Vic fucking Bondi!!! Original lineup AND a new E.P. too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bl-gTDNw_2Y
Articles of Faith return! For the first time in 25 years, the band will reform (with all original members) to record an EP at Chicago's Million Yen Studios for release on Alternative Tentacles on October 5th. It will be available digitally and on vinyl...keep an eye out for some new songs to drop in the weeks leading up to the street date. Not content merely to record, they'll celebrate the new wax with their first live show in 25 years, at Riot Fest in Chicago the week of October 6th-10th. The band will be doing a photo shoot during the recording sessions (July 2-6) to replicate their iconic photo in front of 1000 Liquors on Belmont Avenue from the 80s, at the same location to document the reunion after all these years.

Also, I hear it is going to be the Animosity lineup for C.O.C.

Bad Religion is probably one of the most boring bands I've ever seen. Every time I've seen them.

Bad Religion is one of my favorite bands, and though the only time I've seen them was a 40-minute set at Warped Tour, I know they are absolutely not boring live. They fucking rule at everything, end of story.

You must have lucked out then. I saw them in Minneapolis about 8-10 years ago with GBH, and it was one of the WORST shows I've ever seen (literally). Keith Morris spent more time talking about George Bush and other political crap than they spent playing music (not an exaggeration). When they did play, they played shortened versions.

This should've been an amazing show, since it was at The Qwest, which is a clear channel venue. All the political fagz in MN boycotted it, so we got to see them with a grand total of about 25 other people.

To top it off, GBH were so wasted that they messed up all of their songs, and their manager blamed it on them wanting to get away from the Circle Jerks.

I've seen GBH about 5 other times, and they were very good every time, so I tend to believe this.

The Circle Jerks were so bad, that if they played in DSM, I probably wouldn't go.

Back to Riot Fest, this line up sucks. I'd like to see The Meatmen, but I've either seen all the others multiple times, or they suck.

Not worth driving to Chicago.

i agree with servo.....riot fest is horrible!
the sound in that theater is so awful and echoey it makes the bands not worth seeing.

and the sound on the little second stage out in the entry way is even worse.

after that year i went...i vowed to myself i would never go again.

You assholes that are complaining about the sound are stupid. This is a chance to see some cool bands, some that rarely play, all in one show. When was the last time all of you saw Negative Approach, or plan on seeing them again? 50% of the bands we go see are in fucking basements and the sound sucks. I don't know about all of you, but I would definitely go see these bands in a basement, and not complain about the sound. If it is a sweet band, no matter where it is, I will go see them.

I agree with this. The only difference is that you'd expect a major venue to have at least decent sound and with basements/houses there really are no expectations on sound. And when paying the ticket price for Riot Fest, most would want to be able to hear the bands. But I agree that I'd still pay to see some these bands in a shitty club or basement any day.

id actually say that shitty sound in a basement is pretty negligible due to the fact that youre right there and can feel the noise and have an intimate experience with a band. sure the vocals might not be crisp but you'll hear the instruments pretty well.
bad sound in a huuuuuuuuge multi-thousand person room through a multi-thousand dollar sound system with multiple sound guys is a way worse way to see a band. some of the bands i saw in that room all i could hear were drums and faint vocals

Yeah...I've only been to one or two shows at the Congress and it was 5-6 years ago, but I remember the sound being super shitty then too. It's definitely not an ideal venue for loud/punk music. The Metro has pretty hit or miss sound too. HOB has good sound. Luckily, most of the bands I'd want to see would be playing the smaller venues (Sub-T, Cobra Lounge, Double Door) which actually have better sound.

sound in basements is generally fucking awesome
you are right up against the amps and you can hear and feel the sound.

minus the vocals...usually the vocals are tolerable at best but most times you can barely hear them.

yeah most of those bands at riot fest you might as well be watching them on youtube.
