MOCK MEAT

Post by laffeyn » Tue Sep 01, 2009 2:35 pm

Tell me where to eat to get some good meat substitues when I visit Des Moines. I've been spoiled living in Minneapolis as almost everywhere has a veggie/bean burger if not mock duck/mock chicken/tempeh substitues.

I know Planet Sub has a tempeh sandwich but I remember not being a fan of it.

In the midwest, Minneap is the best of the best when it comes to mock meat.

just pick up some seitan. campbells(assholes), new city market(cool guys) and the fleur hy-vee(no security cameras in health food isle) all carry it--though hy-vee is the cheapest. that or tempeh is the way to go for me. that processed soy shit is absolutely terrible for you and never settles well with me.

its also really easy to make seitan(just vital wheat gluten and a few other ingredients).

So have I, but that's not true according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

If you can see mountains, you are not in the Midwest. That goes for you too, West Virginia. Parts of Colorado (including Denver) are on the Great Plains. Sizable portions of the Great Plains are in the Midwest (Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas) but Colorado wouldn't fit in this segment of the Venn diagram.

Culturally it is quite different form midwestern states, too. There is a lot of Mexican influence and a greater connection with nature/environmental consciousness amongst the people. Also, far far far less fatties.

uh, what are your grounds for disagreement?

Colorado has the lowest obesity rate in the nation and is renown for outdoors activity, national parks, and general organic hippy/earthiness.

the only people I've heard refer to CO as a midwest state are people who moved here from the midwest.

I'm moving from CO in a month, and one of the things I'm going to miss most are the fine-ass fit-ass bodies the girls are sporting 'round these parts.

I don't think that anyone thinks Texas is a Midwestern state. Parts of Texas are on the Great Plains and would be culturally and topographically similar to parts of Kansas and Nebraska though. I suppose arguments could be made that the Texas panhandle is Midwestern as it's not really Southern. Many people think that Texas is pretty much it's own little geographic region, which I would tend to agree with.

Ohio? Definitely Midwestern, although parts of it would be "Near South" in my book.

Now Oklahoma on the other hand, that place is a geographer's nightmare.

theres plenty of fat in co.
robdigi wrote: greater connection with nature/environmental consciousness amongst the people.
this is what i disagree with. just because theres mountains and stuff doesnt mean theres more consciousness about anything.

im biased on co. tho my first experience in co. were skinheads that wanted to fight everyone and in general just pieces of shit and I dislike hippies greatly.

There's plenty of fat everywhere. Just less in Colorado versus everywhere else in the United States. It's very noticeable- obese people stick out around here.

The fact that there are mountains and that they are the pride and joy of the state and that the majority of people use them regularly for outdoor activities means that those people are very sensitive about the things that threaten them. I mean... the very fact that you are disagreeing with this at all shows how out of your element you are. Whatever..

I got thrown out of the Cricket last time I went. I really want to burn down Cherry Creek before I leave here.

huh? i took your statement as snotty. like co. people were more aware of their surroundings, which i guess is the only way i can read this... whatever its fine. wasnt prying just disagreeeing

i would definitely agree that people here are more environmentally conscience. waste management companies offer compost pick up, bike lanes/lock stations are everywhere, totally bitchin public transportation (just wish the lightrail came out here), wind/solar powered houses and businesses are EVERYWHERE, as well as eateries that use compostable silverware, glasses, plates and such. not to mention there are tons of vegan/vegetarian places to eat, and c'mon....everyone knows real environmentalists are vegan.
shit, i work for a division of the city that buys land in and around boulder just to preserve it and protect it from being developed. so in short, yeah, just because there are mountains, people are more conscience.
fat people definitely stick out. it's hard to live in a place that is so accommodating to an active lifestyle and not take advantage of it.
