Tasty Tacos v. Taco Casa

Post by robdigi » Fri Feb 20, 2009 10:45 pm

Throw down.

I know that Tasty Tacos is going to win this poll, but it still has to happen.

Tasty Tacos: their signature "tasty taco" makes use of a somewhat unique cooking technique- the deep fried flour shell. Basic white bread ingredients - ground beef, iceberg lettuce, shredded cheese. A significant contributor to Iowa's sky-high rate of heart disease. Local favorite. Aside from the tacos other menu items are negligible. The name of the game here is Solid Tacos. There's not much else to say.

Taco Casa: large menu, consistent quality throughout (not saying high quality, just consistent). They do an amazing enchilada, with a sauce unlike anywhere else I've been. Some of the best home-brew hot sauce in town. Their ground beef is very lightly seasoned- the burritos are like a mexican Maid-Rite. You can taste the sadness of their employees (some who have been there well over 10 years) in every bite, and there is a distinct element of danger involved in every visit due to questionable kitchen cleanliness. The cheat code here is to order a single cheese enchilada and use the leftover soup of enchilada sauce and melted cheese as a dipping sauce for the beef burrito. This restaurant is full of easter eggs such as the secret bottle of habanero hot sauce kept behind the counter for customer safety. Des Moines' own all-purpose mexican greasy spoon.

Who wins?

My descriptions are obviously biased as I will rep 'Casa until my body turns cold, so please debate the finer points below.

That's cool. You have like a 10% chance of getting pregnant from eating Taco Casa.

I'm all about TT. I've worked in the area of the Taco Casa for almost 10 years and haven't eat there in about 2 years. Their flour tacos suck, cheap cheese or is that cheese stuff and the tortilla is the worst I've ever had.

Now Tasty, I never get enough of. The only problem is the beans, originally it was potatoes. I guess they changed it cause people didn't get it. I have to say their sauce is much better then casa. Casa's is too runny.

That's my cousin. I think she pretty much runs that place.

I've never actually been to Taco Casa. I hear it's pretty decent, but I don't get up that way often.

I am a big fan of Tasty Tacos though. I prefer that over Henry J's. Henry J's is good and all but not quite as good as Tasty Tacos. A lot of old timers won't eat at Henry J's because that place used to be a spay clinic.

Last time I was at Henry J's I ran into someone I knew and she said something about how she likes that place because they have fideo. Ok, never had it. I'll get it as my side. Shit was terrible.

I do like Henry J's shells though. They kind of remind me of an egg roll.

Gotta go with Taco Casa. I've tried Tasty Tacos, but never liked it. I've never been a fan of the deep fried taco shell. I've been to Taco Casa a few times and it was pretty good every time. Nothing to rave over, but the price was right and when you're baked it tastes really good.

If you want good burritos and shit, try the local taco wagons.

Kind of a 50/50 split for myself. I live 4 blocks from a Tasty Taco, and do eat there a few times a month, but there not open on Sundays, which seems to be the day I crave mexican food the most. Taco Casa's sampler number 1 is perfect, it all kind of soups together in the pie tin.

henry j's is a shitbox...the last time i was there, the 'lady' who prepared my food was nice enough to include a few of her long, black hairs in my taco.

tasty tacos gets my vote in the 'best taco' category, but overall, taco casa has a better menu.

No and I think just about everything from Casa comes with "cheese" and I think just about everything is cooked with lard including their beans or at least it tastes like it.

Why even mention this is a topic about tacos? Generally, traditionally tacos come with some form of meat.

Tasty has beans and cheese based dishes. So yes to vegetarian.

The tacos themselves, the reason people go to Tasty Tacos and the reason it's popular, aren't vegetarian.

will go next time I see something at the Mayan, which will hopefully be soon because a friend just started working there and gets free passes out the patoot.

I will make use of your spanish tip when I am there so they know I am down with their culture.

my usual burrito spot is Chez José because it is within walking distance of my prison I mean work.
